Cloud & infrastructure · Lower Mainland, BC

Cloud services and infrastructure, planned, moved and watched.

Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, the servers and network underneath, and me keeping an eye on all of it. For small businesses in Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey and across the Lower Mainland, so a full disk or a failed backup is dealt with before it turns into a lost morning.

What I watch

The quiet problems that cause loud Mondays.

Most outages in a small office start as something small that nobody was looking at: a backup that stopped running weeks ago, a disk filling up, a certificate nobody knew existed. A monitoring agent on your servers and computers tells me first.

SignalWhen it tripsWhat I do

Backups

A job fails or doesn't run

Rerun it, find out why, and fix the cause. Restores are tested on a schedule, not assumed to work.

Disk space

A volume passes a set threshold

Clear what's safe to clear, or plan more storage before anything stops writing.

Internet links

A connection drops or slows

Confirm the failover took over, and chase the provider so you don't have to.

Patching

Updates fail or a device falls behind

Retry, reboot after hours, or check the machine in person if it keeps refusing.

Microsoft 365 & Google

Odd sign-ins, full mailboxes, MFA gaps

Look into the sign-in, free up the mailbox, and close the gap. Security alerts also feed the security side.

Renewals

A domain, certificate or warranty nears expiry

Renew it or tell you in good time, with what it costs and whether you still need it.

Monitoring is part of managed IT. You hear from me when there's something to decide, not every time a disk crosses a line.

Microsoft 365 & Google Workspace migrations

Moved over a weekend instead of a quarter.

Mail and files are copied across in the weeks before, while everyone keeps working. The switch happens while you're closed.

FriSwitch

Mail records moved, final sync.

SatCheck

Mailboxes, permissions, devices.

SunTest

Sign in as staff. Go or no-go.

MonWork

I'm on hand as people log in.

  • Google Workspace to Microsoft 365, or the reverse
  • Office file servers to SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams
  • Hosted or on-site email to Exchange Online
  • Ageing servers to the cloud, or to a smaller replacement
Infrastructure

What sits underneath, and who looks after it.

Cloud services only work as well as the network and devices between them and your staff. I plan, install and run each part, so a problem has one owner.

Cloud

Microsoft 365 & Google Workspace

Set up properly rather than left on defaults: shared mailboxes, SharePoint permissions, Teams, licences matched to who needs what.

Compute

Servers & storage

Windows servers, virtual machines and NAS boxes where something has to stay on site, sized for what you run and backed up off site.

Network

Firewall, switches & Wi-Fi

Access points placed where people sit, guests kept off the network your files live on, and a backup internet line if downtime costs you.

Access

Remote access & offices

VPNs and site-to-site links, so a second location or working from home doesn't depend on someone leaving a PC on.

Apps

The software on top

When nothing off the shelf fits, I build the tool or integration on the same foundation.

Physical

The cabling under it all

Slow Wi-Fi and dropped calls often trace back to the wiring. I install, test and label structured cabling myself.

Monitored remotely, serviced across the Lower Mainland.

Common questions

About cloud, servers and monitoring

01What do you monitor?
Backups, disk space, patch status, device health, internet connections, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace sign-ins and mailboxes, and renewal dates for domains, certificates and warranties. Exactly what's covered depends on what you run, and I list it for you up front.
02Will we get alert emails all day?
No. Alerts come to me. I deal with the routine ones and contact you when something needs a decision, like buying more storage or replacing a device that keeps failing.
03Does Microsoft back up our Microsoft 365 data?
Microsoft keeps the service running and has recycle bins and retention settings, but that isn't a backup you control. Deleted items are eventually purged, and a compromised account can damage files that then sync everywhere. I add a separate backup of mail, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams, and the same for Google Workspace.
04How long does a Microsoft 365 migration take?
The switch itself is usually a weekend. The planning and background copying before it take longer, depending on how many mailboxes and how much data you have. You get a date for the cutover in the plan, before any work starts.
05Can you move us from Google Workspace to Microsoft 365?
Yes, and the other way. Mail, calendars, contacts and Drive files move across. A few things don't translate directly, like Google Forms and Apps Script automations, and I list those in the plan with what replaces them.
06Do you need to install anything on our computers?
A small monitoring and management agent on each server and computer. It's how I see backups, disks and patches, and how I fix things remotely without interrupting anyone.
07Do you look after the network and cabling too?
Yes. Firewalls, switches, Wi-Fi and servers, plus the structured cabling underneath. One person across the whole chain means nobody argues about whose problem a slow connection is.
08What does it cost?
Monitoring and day-to-day support is a flat monthly fee agreed in writing, usually as part of managed IT. Projects like a migration or a server replacement get a written quote after I've looked at your setup.

Roughly how many people, where email and files live today, and what's worrying you. I'll come back with questions, a rough plan, or a time to look at your setup. Rather talk it through? Book a free IT assessment, or call or email me directly.
